This is a Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis or “itch mite”, often associated with the transmission of human scabies. Scabies is a highly contagious infestation of the skin caused by a mite affecting humans and animals. Scabies is usually transmitted by intimate interpersonal contact, often sexual in nature, but transmission through casual contact can occur.
