A child’s face showing the characteristic spotted rash of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. This nine day old facial rash is characteristic of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and was caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a species of bacteria that is spread to humans by ixodid (hard) ticks.
